I hope you didn’t blink after Halloween because after you took off the kids costumes, sorted the candy, stashed some for yourself, and felt the guilt of all the candy you ate…all of the Christmas ads began to air.
Even I who usually can get into the spirit, am saying this is too much too soon.
With many stores gearing up for the end of the year blitz, some retailers have decided to up the ante this year by opening not just on Thanksgiving night but in the morning!
Happy Black Friday Thursday.
Many stores are opting for their bottom line, and if that means being open at 8am on Thanksgiving Day then so be it.
Even Best Buy, who has stuck to the Black Friday being on Friday has changed their tune this year and will be opening at 6pm on Thursday. The way I see it, the demand is there, so the stores will do what the consumers want, especially if for them it means that they come out in the black.
Let’s face it…the economy just isn’t good and hasn’t been in years. The government shutdown impacted many and right before the holiday season. Work is slow, but costs haven’t gone down. So if I have a limited budget to bring Christmas to my household then I would be willing to sacrifice a second serving, or the length of time spent with family that by 5pm you’re tired of anyway, or falling asleep to the football game by standing in line and scoring the great deals.
The flipside to the argument is that you have the people who work at the stores not being able to have the holiday. Well to that I say… retail workers aren’t the only ones who have to work holidays. When you work in the service industry you accept the craptastic fact that you have to work on a holiday. From nurses to gas station workers… people have to work. And don’t feel too bad for them…often times they get a perk for working that day. Half of them are people who are working seasonally so they can afford their own Christmas.
So while many of you may feel like it’s unacceptable to open up that early and that the stores are just being greedy…I hear you. But I also feel like if the volume of people weren’t there to buy the items then the stores wouldn’t open. As for me, if the deal is worth it and I really want it or need it, then I will be shopping in between cooking and travelling! I have no shame in my savings game!
What do you think about Black Friday moving to Thursday for some retailers?
