Last night, my mom called me and it inspired this blogpost. A few weeks ago she called me to tell me she had gotten some test results back and that she is prediabetic. She called last night to give me some info since she was doing some further research. I forgot the exact terminology used, but she doesn’t have Type 2 diabetes which is the one that is adult onset and is usually controllable/avoidable by changing diet/activity. Hers is genetic which is why she is concerned for me, because we have a lot of diabetes in our family. So just a few things that she wanted me to know, most of which I already did know, but I was super tired and on my way to bed, so I just let her talk, lol…but I already know that I’m at more risk to have diabetes because they diagnosed me with gestational diabetes when I was pregnant with Brianna. I don’t believe to this day that I had it, but doctors don’t listen, so it is what it is. I didn’t have it while pregnant with Jordan (which further goes to show that I didn’t have it, because once you do have it, you usually will have it with any following pregnancies) But I digress…aside from gestational diabetes, there are other factors that I have, which are that I’m overweight, have a high BMI, I’m black, having larger babies, and family history. So not only is she concerned about me, but also concerned about the kids, and wants us to eat healthily and basically try to avoid having diabetes.
So she was telling me about some of the changes she has made, like working out in the mornings, eating several small meals a day, you know all of the things that I know to do but don’t always do. The eating 5-6 meals, I’m sorry, I can’t do that. I don’t have the kind of job that I can do that. I’ve tried it before and I do better with eating the regular 3 meals with a snack. Right now I don’t eat nearly as much as I need to and I’m working on that. But one tip she shared, is kinda the whole purpose for this blog, which is that my aunt who had diabetes and is now off of all her meds, she focused on strength training. That perked my ears up. The strength training upped her metabolism, which in turn, helped her body to better burn insulin. I wouldn’t have even thought about it like that. So it has not only, kinda motivated me to keep it going, but now I have to look at it from more of a health perspective instead of just for vanity. I gotta do it anyway, not just to lose weight so I can wear what I wanna wear, but also so that I’m not getting that diagnosis later on in life and having to deal with the healthcare costs and the life changes I’d have to go thru at that time. I’ve already had to deal with pricking my fingers with a glucose meter for 2 months of my life, I sure don’t want to have to do it at any other time in my life. So I’m looking at this with fresh eyes. I gotta do it for me and for my babies. Right now my biggest struggle is working out. Not because I don’t want to, but because my body doesn’t wanna get moving in the morning. It’s been a big transition on our whole family since school has started. We’re all running on little sleep and we can definitely tell. I’m definitely working on it, and this recent news has added fuel to my fire.
On a side note…I really hope that this blog has made some kind of sense! lol I woke up with ridiculous allergies, and took some benadryl not too long ago…let’s just say, I’m about to lay down because my body is shutting down!
