It’s that time of the year…the holiday season is officially upon us. Ready or Not!!! And I know a lot of people are talking about what they’re thankful for…that’s not what this blog is about. But please keep reading! {that blog is still to come…} This blog is driven by my watching the tele this morning. I have been watching “Wake up with Al” on the weather channel in the mornings while I’m getting ready for work. Quite frankly, the local news is too depressing for me and this show gives me my weather and a few Today Show-esque segments. I’m personally a GMA watcher, but the point is, I get the weather and some non-depressing tv. So on today’s show they had some diet twins talking about how to avoid gaining weight over the holidays. What foods to eat, what choices to make. And quite frankly, it irritated me.
If you’re already leading a healthy lifestyle or for the most part you are, then I say eat however you want to eat for Thanksgiving. The way I see it, Thanksgiving food isn’t food that I partake in on a regular basis. In reality it’s a twice a year kind of meal. I have it Thanksgiving and Christmas. So if you’re already eating well and working out, then what difference does it make if you endulge on the big turkey day? I know I will! But I also know that I will workout in the morning. I know that I will workout the next day, and my workout schedule will continue as usual. I know that I will make room in my diet to accomodate the 2 family meals I’ll be having. My appetite isn’t ginormous as it is, so it’s not like I’m gonna gorge out on food. Will I have that macaroni and cheese? Yes, nobody makes it like my Aunt Faye! Will I have that sweet potato pie? Hell to the yeah! And the turkey and the stuffing and the greens…I mean for crying out loud it’s one day!!!
Now here’s what I won’t be doing…I won’t be taking home large portions of food to tempt myself to continue the feast for days. I won’t keep eating past my fill. And I won’t let it throw me off track. I feel like if you wanna fill your plate, then do so, just get one helping of whatever it is you want. The key is not going back for seconds, thirds and fourths. Instead of zoning out on the couch with the itis after you eat, go for a walk with the family members. Got a Wii? Play with your family. Got a large family? Play some football. The key is balance. And yes, Thanksgiving will throw you off a bit, but just by a tad. It’s not the make all end all. It’s just a day to be thankful for all of your blessings and to spend the day with your family/friends and great food.
So here are a few of my tips:
- eat what you like, just get one serving/spoonful and fill your plate with a variety of items
- eat well all week long, it’s not benefitting you to have an entire week of poor food choices
- keep moving!!! fit in a workout on Turkey day {especially if you’re not the cook}
- don’t step on the scale the next day!!! lol
- let yourself go that day, but stay strict and on track the rest of the week
- eat slowly, no need in pushing food down your throat! enjoy your food!
Happy Thanksgiving!!! Enjoy your food and family!!!
