Friday 7/13/12
I am still counting down to our beach vacation…it’s officially a week away!!! At the same time, I need to do something with this head of mine! I plan on being in either the ocean or the pool 80% of the time there. That means I’m not going to be doing a lot of washing my hair to make it look right. That’s just too much to deal with.
For the past month, I’ve been watching Youtube {one of the best resources ever} to learn how to do my own Senegalese Twists. Now that I’ve watched a few videos, I know that I can do the task. Am I up for it? That’s an entirely different story. My life is all sorts of crazy, whacked out, depressed, fatigued, and the list can really go on and on. But this is my last opportunity to get it done, otherwise I will be spending my beach vacation doing a lot of hair combing and that’s just not my idea of fun in the sun.
It is going on 8:30 pm on this Friday night. The goal was to start tonight but the day has really taken me on a roller coaster trip and I wasn’t planning on riding any roller coasters! So I’m waiting to see if I get my usual second wind on Fridays that usually occurs around 10pm. If so, I’m getting started.
Tuesday 7/17/12
Okay, so it took me all weekend to get these twists in my head. I took a lot of breaks. I still was mommy, so it’s not like I could just go non-stop. But overall, I’m pleased with the results. I’m proud of myself for being able to twist my own hair. And not start from braiding, I twisted the way it’s supposed to be done. Now with that being said, it wasn’t until I got to the front that I was really feeling like I had this whole technique down.
Now as of Tuesday, only 2 full days of having my twists in…I’m ready for them to go!!! They are beyond aggravating!! I have sealed and sealed these ends but there are a handful of twists that will just not stay twisted. So I will see what I can do with the lighter tonight when I touch up a couple of them.
I have received a lot of compliments tho. People are shocked when I say I did them myself. And especially since it’s my first time braiding on my own hair. Shoot I’m proud too! The hardest part is getting started, and the very top of my head…the crown. Even doing at the nape of my neck was easier than doing at the very center of my head…and those are spaced out and not as neat, and I guess I’ll get better at that with time and practice.
Okay, enough talking and on to some pics:
There will be at least two more posts regarding my Senegalese Twists. My next post will be a step by step on how I did them, and the youtube videos that helped me the most. I want to wait until I have made sure my ends stay sealed. And I will do a post with the different ways I styled my twists. I for one am using this opportunity to bring out my afro-centric side. I have never had the desire to go natural…this is as close as it gets for me. I don’t like a lot of hair, so although my twists are long, I planned on them being up most of the time.
All in all, it’s a weekend well spent. I got a style that will last me a few weeks and the primary reason was to not have to fuss with my hair during vacation. So that will be great for me. And I didn’t have to endure the pain of cornrows or the cost of getting my twists done professionally or semi-professionally…nothing beats paying $6 for hair 🙂
